Afterschool EaTs

Every day around 4 p.m. , you're bound to find a host of inexpensive snack carts parked outside of Ho Chi Minh City secondary and high schools. This carts whips up quick 'n dirty grub for students looking to fill their tummies before heading home. One of the most popular snacks is 'xoi chien'. Chien means fried and Xoi is sticky rice.

Basket of freshly fried sticky rice patties, waiting for their ceremonial stuffing of..

..a smorgasbord of piglet offerings. From the top left we've got pig liver pate, dried shredded pork and a mystery pork and mushroom mix. Stuff all three inside the crispy sticky rice patty and finish with a squirt of chili sauce for a crispy mid-afternoon delight.

Beware, though 'cause the unctuous nature of these tempting treats leaves you feeling heavy if too many are consumed. Trust, keep it to 3. Anyways, for 1.500 VND a pop you can probably treat your friends- or the entire 6th grade class if you don't have any.
